Eco-School

Glenwood House enrolled in the international Eco-Schools programme in 2004. The aim of this programme is to involve learners in working towards a sustainable and better environment for all. We became involved in many community and environmental projects in George. As a new school, we developed our school gardens and started a recycling programme.

Over the next four years we continued as an Eco-School in various ways. We joined the Adopt-A-Beach initiative and participated in street collections, Marine Week coastal clean-up days, river health projects, and provided support for the Penguin Rehabilitation Centre. We also participated in an alien tree hack, joined the Earth-hour initiative, and highlighted the current water crisis by switching our school's water supply off for a day.

Environmental special days are celebrated in assemblies, and on Arbour Day we plant trees. Bird Week has led pupils to make owl boxes which are mounted in the trees on the school's grounds. As an Eco-School, we encourage learners to participate in our annual grade calmps, which always involve outdoor pursuits and environmental activities. Lessons incorporate environmental themes as far as possible. Life Orientation and Technology lessons have embraced this most successfully. All Grade Eleven learners complete a basic sailing course as part of their Life Orientation curriculum. Experts in various fields visit our school once a term and address the school during assembly. We have established an environmental club, and members are organising activities on a regular basis.

Glenwood House achieved International Eco-School status in 2008 and continues to hold this status.
