Further Education and Training Phase

A learner must pass:

  • One official language at Home Language level with at least 40%
  • 2 other subjects at 40%
  • 3 subjects at 30%

NOTES:

  1. It is compulsory for a learner to pass an official language at home language level i.e. at 40% or above.
  2. If the learner offers two official languages, both at home language level, and gets 40% or more in one of the languages but less than 40% in the other, the learner will qualify for a pass in Home Language.
  3. Learners may fail one subject, except for the official language at home language level, and still pass the examination, provided all other criteria are met.
  4. The learner may fail any one of the other fundamental subjects (a second official laguage, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, or Life Orientation) and still pass the examination as a whole, provided all other criteria are met.
  5. Immigrants are exempt from this provision. Provision as per the immigrant concession will apply in respect of the language requirements.
  6. If the learner has achieved over 30% or 40% as applicable in Life Orientation, this subject counts as a subject that has been passed at the requires level.
  7. If a learner offers more than the minimum number of 7 subjects, passes in the additional subjects will be taken into account when determining whether a learner has met the minimum requirements.

 

NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION

Please take note that fulfilling the minimum requirements does not guarantee entry into tertiary study. It does, however, allow the learner to apply to a tertiaty institution. Please contact your chosen institution to inquire about any specific entry requirements to particular institutions or courses.

CHECKLIST TO PASS THE NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE:

  • Pass an official language on the home language level i.e. 40% or more
  • Pass any 2 other subjects with 40% or more
  • Pass an additional 3 subjects with 30% or more

CHECKLIST TO PASS THE NCS WITH ENTRY TO HIGHER CERTIFICATE STUDY:

  • Pass an official language on the home language level i.e. 40% or more
  • Meet the language requirement to qualify for further study
  • Pass any 2 other subjects with 40% or more
  • Pass an additional 3 subjects with 30% or more

CHECKLIST TO PASS THE NCS WITH ENTRY TO DIPLOMA STUDY:

  • Pass an official language on the home language level i.e. 40% or more
  • Meet the language requirement to qualify for further study
  • Pass any 3 other 20-credit subjects with 40% or more (Take Note: Life Orientation is a 10-credit subject, and all other subjects are 20-credit)
  • Pass an additional 2 subjects with 30% or more (Take Note: Life Orientation can be considered to fulfill this function)

CHECKLIST TO PASS THE NCS WITH ENTRY TO BACHELOR DEGREE STUDIES

  • Pass an official language on the home language level i.e. 40% or more
  • Meet the language requirement to qualify for further study
  • Achieve 50% or more in at least 4 designated subjects
  • Pass an additional 2 subjects with 30% or more

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT FOR ENTRY TO FURTHER STUDY:

  • One of the two official languages offered by the learner must be either English or Afrikaans. To meet the language criterion to qualify for entry to study at a tertiary education institution, the learner must pass the official language at the 1st additional level i.e. at 30% or more.
  • A learner who offers 2 official languages at home language (i.e. one of which is English or Afrikaans, and the other is another of the official languages e.g. Zulu) and receives between 30 and 39% in English (i.e. does not pass it but receives 30% or above) and passes the other language, the learner qualifies for entry to further study at a tertiary institution.
